Thanks to Dr. Ta-Wei Su for creating early cannulation grafts for patients of Rong Yuan Clinic.
An early cannulation graft, as the name says, is a graft that can be needled for dialysis within a short time after surgery.
Dialysis needling can usually be done smoothly within 24 to 72 hours after surgery.
Patients can thus skip the step of having a dialysis catheter placed, reducing the complications of catheter placement.
Unlike conventional grafts, this newer type of early cannulation graft has a three-layer structure that strengthens the sealing of the needle holes after puncture and reduces oozing.
Over the past few years Dr. Su’s team has accumulated considerable experience with early cannulation grafts.
For patients with no suitable superficial vein or who cannot have a native fistula, with an early cannulation graft nearly 80% of patients were able to complete their first needling for dialysis smoothly within 48 hours after surgery, reducing the inconvenience of having a catheter and clearly improving quality of life.
