Stenosis / Occlusion

If a smooth dialysis access is compared to a wide five-lane highway,

when it suddenly narrows ahead to a single lane, a big traffic jam results, and traffic may even back up severely.

Stenosis of a vessel is just like this analogy: poor blood flow easily leads to blockage.

In clinical dialysis it shows in different ways, such as insufficient flow with the needle slipping, excessively high venous pressure and difficulty stopping bleeding at the needle site after dialysis, among others.

If stenosis is not treated, it leads to vessel blockage (the big jam, the backed-up traffic).

Regular vascular surgery follow-up and learning to care for your own access can both help find stenosis early, so that it can be maintained early and blockage avoided.

For stenosis or blockage, the great majority can now be reopened in a minimally invasive way.

Common methods are balloon angioplasty or stent placement to overcome the stenosis.
